Things I learnt from our recent PCOS webinar in @thehseofficial
Its said to be an ancient disorder dating back to hunter gatherer era. It was seen as an advantage as it increased the capacity to store energy during famine, conceive less often and avoid child birth complications and increased bone density and muscle mass that benefit survival outcomes.
The thing is, NOW the environment has changed but the female body has not. What were mild advantageous symptoms back then are now more problematic and due to all our environmental factors that didn’t exist back in the day.
- Toxins (in food, cosmetics, cleaning products and more)
- Poor sleep / circadian rhythms
- Nutrient poor foods
- In utero factors
- Poor gut health
Women with PCOS actually have a microbiome with less diversity of beneficial microbes than non-PCOS women and we all know now that the level of our gut health has a MASSIVE impact on our hormone balance and our mental and immune health.
The pill is also promoted as an aid to symptoms of PCOS 🤦🏼♀️ however the effects of the pill are actually more detrimental long term. The pill shuts down the hormonal system completely and sends you into a very estrogen dominant state, it breaks down the microbiome and its classed as an endocrine disrupter.
“The body’s normal endocrine functioning involves very small changes in hormone levels, yet we know even these small changes can cause significant developmental and biological effects. This observation leads scientists to think that endocrine-disrupting chemical exposures, even at low amounts, can alter the body’s sensitive systems and lead to health problems.
Even low doses of endocrine-disrupting chemicals may be unsafe” - Direct quote from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences.
My mind is being constantly blown the more I learn about this stuff. And how backwards our medical system seems to be. I implore you to do your research if you are dealing with PCOS or any other poor bodily functions in your day to day. YOU ARE THE CURE!! You can change your story and circumstances. If you know someone struggling tag them in this so they know there is sooooo much hope!
